This is a book called the silver donkey. it is about two girls that found a soldier in the woods. the soldier had run away from world war one because he was blind. at first the girls found him and thought he was dead, but then they wondered if he was only asleep. so they went back and he was awake.

the soldier had run away because he had got blind in the war because his eyes didn't want to see all the killing in the war anymore. another reason why he ran away was because a letter from his mom told him that his brother john was very sick and they wanted him to come home. so he slept in the forest for a few nights and the girls would sneak food from their pantry and give it to him.

the soldier had a silver donkey that one of the girls liked to play with. his brother john had found it in the dirt and gave it to him because when john had heard that he was going into the war john decided it would be a good luck charm. when the girls visited him, he would give the littlest girl the donkey to play with and tell them stories about donkeys.

one day their brother asked them where they were going and the oldest one said that if he wanted to come that he couldn't tell anyone else what he saw. so the big brother went with them and he saw the soldier and he kept asking the soldier to tell him about the war. but the sisters kept stopping him from asking. the big brother kept thinking about ways for them to help the soldier to get home, then he figured out a way. so the next time that he went to visit the soldier he said that he needed to bring one more person to come a visit you. the soldier said that was ok and so the brother brought his friend fabrice.

fabrice worked at the docks of the english channel and the soldier had to get across the english channel to get home. so one night the boy and the girls asked their mom and dad if they could go to the dock to catch some fish. their father said yes but the mother said no. so they said that they would do all their chores in the morning without complaining and then the mother said it was ok. so they went out and walked to the docks and fabrice went to the woods to get the soldier.

then fabrice and the soldier went to the dock and met the boy and the two girls there. they all said goodbye to the soldier and fabrice took him to the other side of the channel and that was the end of the book. the next time the little sister came to the tree the soldier sat at, she found the silver donkey, the soldier left it for her.

this book is about every type of the military. it says that army is powerful and the most powerful in all the world. the army fights on the land. the navy has boats that carry airplanes. the boats are called aircraft carriers. the navy fights on water. the airforce fights in the sky. the marines train to fight on the land, the water, and the sky.

people in the army have to get a special hair cut so everyone's hair looks the same. you get medals for doing a good job in the army. if you want to be in the army you have to be neat and tidy, respectful and be responsible.

the worst thing about being in the army is being away from home. but writing letters and going to church helps keep spirits up.

the army men eat yucky meals in a baggie when they go to war. they are called mre's which means meals ready to eat.

in boot camp men have to do 17 sit-ups and run a mile in 8 minutes and 30 seconds. ladies have to run a mile in 10 minutes and 30 seconds and do 17 sit-ups. in boot camp people are trained to fight in the air, water, or ground. they are trained to use their weapons properly. boot camp lasts for 6 to 12 weeks. my friend's dad is there right now. he wants to be in the army.

we celebrate these people in the armed forces on veterans day and memorial day. i hope you like this book. i think i want to be in the military when i grow up.

this book is about an airplane man that dropped candy out of a airplane. he was nice. a little girl heard about the airplane guy in a newspaper her mommy had read to her. the airplane guy dropped candy because it was after world war 2 and her house was all bombed up and she only got one egg a day to eat out of her four chickens. there was not enough food for everyone so the airplanes were helping them by bringing them food and coal and clothes and stuff.

the little girl asked her mommy if they could go to the airport to get some candies and her mommy said yes. so they went there a week later and the airplane guy dropped candy but pretty soon the candy was all gone and the little girl did not get any.

so she wrote a letter to the airplane guy to look for the house with the white chickens and drop a parachute of candy there. she also told him that the airplanes scared her chickens and they weren't laying any eggs. she said if he dropped some candy on the yard it would make everything ok. but the airplane guy could not find her house so he mailed some candy to her. i don't know how he knew her address. the letter must of had a return address sticker.

over 20 years later the airplane guy had to work in germany again and he got invited for dinner at the same little girl's house. and the girl was grown up then and she still had the letter that the airplane guy had given her 22 years ago. now the little girl was a pilot too.

this was not a made up story. i hoped you read it. i liked it.

these two book are about memorial day. i wanted to check out books about memorial day because i didn't know too much about it. i knew it was about putting flowers on people's graves who were in the war.








memorial day started after the civil war because they wanted to remember soldiers who died fighting in the army. they would put flowers at their graves, and flags. they called it decoration day.

people sometimes throw flowers in the water to remember the soldiers who died at sea and an important ceremony is done at a big graveyard in virginia. thousands of people from the armed forces are buried there.

many u.s. soldiers died in other wars too. memorial day is a time to remember them.

i have helped my great-grandmother decorate graves. not all of them are soldiers some of them are just our family members. we put flags and flowers in the ground around them.

we can learn about the wars in books. one of my good friends, clifton, fought in world war 2. my great-grandfathers both served in world war 2 too. my uncle jerry fought in the army. he lost his leg in the vietnam war and now he has a fake leg. my uncle jay fought in the army too. he survived, he didn't get shot and he didn't get hurt.

i got this book at the library too. i like the armed forces so i got this book because i wanted to learn more about it. it is about military helicopters.

military helicopters carry army men and stuff for the army men. some helicopters fight in battles. helicopters spin fast to lift the helicopter into the air. the thing that spins is called a rotor. helicopters have guns and missiles. missiles are on their little wings and the gun is at the bottom of the helicopter. some helicopters have metal armor that protect the helicopter in battle.

helicopter crews work together to fly the helicopter. troops ride on a bench on the side of the helicopter and parachute down the battle field to fight. i saw an airplane on the memorials day parade and people parachuted out of them onto the street. i don't know if i would want to parachute someday buy my grandma said she wouldn't let me.

military helicopters are mighty machines.

this book is about tanks. it says that tanks are powerful fighting machines. they can shoot a long ways and they have a machine gun at the top of the tank. my brothers huston and avery like tanks. there is a game on the computer that we all like. it is about a tank that tries to hit targets and you are the tank. you can try the game here.

the radio guy is the captain of the tank. he gives command to the people in the tank. the driver of the tank sits in a hole under the line that goes out into the air that shoots the canon ball. people called "gunners" fire the machine gun on top of the tank. in the picture in the book, a guy is about to fire the machine gun while another army man puts his fingers in his ears. the tanks armor is made out of metal. it protects the people that drive and control the tank. tanks have a big tube in front of them called cannons and they can turn any direction the book says. the crew also uses the machine guns during battles. there is no need to stop but at the army station to get food and supplies. tanks have big wheels inside of their tracks that can make the tracks move which will make the tanks move. the army uses tanks in battles.

i think tanks are cool. you can get this book at the library.

this is a book that i got from the library. i haven't read it yet. huston has read it, he says it's really fun to look at the pictures. i think i am going to read it today.

i read a submarine book from the library last night with dad. we heard that some submarine are bigger than a football field! the missiles of a submarine can go a long ways. they could get to new york city when they are in the middle of the pacific ocean - over 1500 miles. i said to dad that i don't think they could use them in iraq, it's too sandy.


a long time ago we watched a movie about a submarine that went through a mountain under water. it was squishy but the submarine could get through and they came out in a dinosaur land.

i like submarines - especially the ones that help the navy.
